Cherenkov effect, where matter can be faster than light itself. - Matter can only be faster than light in a medium other than a vacuum, such as water. In water, the speed of light is reduced by almost 2/3, reaching 225 thousand km/s (20 °C). The Cherenkov effect occurs when charged particles, such as electrons, move in a medium at speeds greater than the speed of light and part of their kinetic energy is dissipated due to contact with the medium, transforming into visible light.
